Good Questions

Concrete Questions, Answered

The things homeowners and businesses ask us most. Do not see yours? Just give us a call.

It comes down to the size, the thickness, the base prep, and the finish you want, so every job is a little different. In our area, proper base work below the frost line is a big part of the price, and it is the part that keeps your concrete from heaving later. We give you a clear written estimate before any work starts, and the estimate is always free. Call 612-618-9269 or send the form for a real number on your project.

Our main pouring season runs roughly April through late October, before the ground freezes hard. We can pour in cooler shoulder-season weather with the right mix and curing blankets, but the calendar fills up fast once spring hits. We are booking the 2026 season now across Shakopee and the metro, so the sooner you reach out the easier it is to lock in your timing.

Freeze and thaw is the number one thing we build against here. We use air-entrained concrete, cut proper control joints, and put down a solid compacted base so slabs resist cracking. For anything that carries a footing, we go below the Twin Cities frost line, which runs deep in our area, so it will not heave when the ground moves. Good prep is why concrete lasts decades here instead of a few seasons.

Not the first winter. Fresh concrete is most vulnerable to deicers in its first season, and Minnesota road salt is hard on it. Use sand for traction that first winter, skip products with ammonium nitrate or sulfate, and once it has cured we can seal it to stand up to years of salt and plowing. We will walk you through caring for it before we leave the job.

It depends on the project and whether it touches the public right-of-way, like a new curb cut, driveway apron, or sidewalk along the street. A lot of backyard flatwork does not need one, but when the city or county requires a permit or approval, we handle pulling it as part of the job so you are covered and inspection-ready.

A good guideline is to stay off it for about 24 hours, wait a day or two before regular foot traffic, and about 7 days before you park a vehicle on it. Concrete keeps gaining strength for roughly 28 days. Cooler Minnesota temps can slow curing down, and we plan for that and tell you exactly what to expect for your pour.

Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. Stamped and colored concrete gives a patio, walkway, or entry the look of stone, brick, or slate for less than the real thing. Sealed and poured right, it actually handles our freeze-thaw better than pavers, which tend to shift and heave over Minnesota winters.

We are based in Shakopee and cover the southwest metro, from Prior Lake and Savage to Chaska, Chanhassen, and Eden Prairie. For larger residential and commercial projects we travel across the greater Twin Cities, so if you are anywhere in the area, just ask and we will let you know.

Yes. RockHard Custom Concrete is licensed and insured on every job, residential and commercial. You are covered from the first day on site through the final finish.
